- 1/4 cup sugar 55g
- 1/4 cup flour 35g
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 egg white or 1 whole egg for a richer cake
- 3 tablespoons buttermilk
- 1-2 teaspoons red food coloring
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon hot water
For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
- 1/4 cup softened butter 56g
- 4 oz room temperature cream cheese 113g
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
Preparing the Cake Batter
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Mix the dry ingredients: sugar, flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add wet ingredients: oil, melted butter, vanilla, egg white, buttermilk, and food coloring. Gently whisk to combine.
Bloom cocoa powder in hot water and mix into the batter.
Baking the Cake
Divide the batter between two greased 4-inch cake pans.
Bake for about 15 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
