Dry Ingredients:
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
Wet Ingredients:
- 1 cup buttermilk shaken
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs at room temperature
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot brewed coffee
Preparing the Baking Pans
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease two 9-inch round cake pans thoroughly.
Line the bottom of each pan with parchment paper for easy removal.
Mixing the Batter
In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
Pour in the hot coffee and stir gently until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.
Baking and Cooling the Cake
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 30 minutes.
Carefully turn out the cakes onto a cooling rack and let them cool completely before frosting.
