  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1 cup buttermilk shaken
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot brewed coffee

Preparing the Baking Pans

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease two 9-inch round cake pans thoroughly.
  • Line the bottom of each pan with parchment paper for easy removal.

Mixing the Batter

  • In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  • Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Pour in the hot coffee and stir gently until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.

Baking and Cooling the Cake

  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  • Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 30 minutes.
  • Carefully turn out the cakes onto a cooling rack and let them cool completely before frosting.
